An income tax notice should be handled calmly and within the prescribed timeline. The objective is to understand the issue, collect relevant records and submit a factual response.

For professional support, see Tax Notices, Scrutiny, Assessments & Appeals.

Read the notice carefully

Identify the section, assessment year, issue raised, response deadline and mode of submission. Check whether the notice refers to income mismatch, deduction claim, return processing, scrutiny, demand or another matter.

Collect supporting records

Useful records may include the filed return, computation, Form 26AS, AIS, bank statements, books of account, invoices, investment documents, property or capital-gains records and earlier correspondence.

Reconcile before responding

Compare the issue in the notice with the taxpayer's return and supporting evidence. If there is a mismatch, understand the reason before preparing the reply.

Prepare a factual submission

A good response is clear, organised and supported by documents. It should answer the issue raised, attach relevant evidence and avoid unsupported statements.

If the matter relates to GST or business records, the response may also need coordination with GST Services or Audit & Assurance Services.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the first step after receiving an income tax notice?

Read the complete notice, verify the communication, identify the section and deadline, and preserve all attachments before preparing a response.

Should a taxpayer reply without reviewing records?

A response should normally be based on records and facts. Replying without reviewing documents can create avoidable inconsistencies.

Can every tax notice be resolved in the same way?

No. The response depends on the notice type, issue raised, records available, stage of proceedings and applicable law.
