Income Tax Demand Notice: Reconcile Tax, TDS and Payments Before Responding
Income tax demand showing on the portal? Learn how to reconcile tax, TDS, challans, payments, rectification and appeal options before responding.
Last Updated: 22 July 2026
An income tax demand on the e-Filing portal may be correct, partly correct or incorrect. The right response depends on why the demand arose and whether the issue is computational, credit-related or disputed on merits.
For professional review, see Tax Notices, Scrutiny, Assessments & Appeals.
Why demand may arise
Common reasons include:
- tax payable as per processing or assessment;
- TDS/TCS/advance tax credit mismatch;
- challan not matched or posted to the wrong assessment year;
- wrong minor head or challan particulars;
- interest, fee or late-payment calculation;
- disallowance or addition in assessment;
- refund adjusted against an earlier demand.
First reconcile before responding
Do not respond only from memory. Compare the demand with:
- the relevant intimation or assessment order;
- filed return and computation;
- Form 26AS, AIS and TIS;
- challans and bank payment proof;
- TDS certificates;
- rectification or revised-return acknowledgements;
- earlier portal responses or appeal records.
Portal response options
The Income Tax Department's outstanding-demand service allows taxpayers to view and respond to demands. Depending on the demand status, the portal may allow payment, agreement, partial agreement or disagreement.
| Situation | Practical next step |
|---|---|
| Demand is correct and unpaid | Pay and submit response. |
| Demand is correct but already paid | Provide payment/challan details and keep proof ready. |
| Partly correct | Pay the undisputed part and respond for the disputed part. |
| TDS/challan mismatch | Reconcile Form 26AS/AIS/challan and consider correction or response. |
| Dispute on assessment addition | Appeal may be more appropriate than rectification. |
Rectification vs appeal
Rectification is generally considered where there is a mistake apparent from record, such as a visible credit mismatch or arithmetical error.
Appeal is different. If the dispute involves addition on merits, interpretation of law, evidence appreciation or factual disagreement, appeal may be the correct route, subject to limitation and maintainability.
Do not use rectification as a shortcut where the issue requires appeal.
For first-appeal preparation, read CIT(A) Appeal: Documents, Grounds and Statement of Facts Checklist.
Practical decision guide
- Computational or apparent mistake: consider rectification.
- TDS/challan mismatch: first reconcile credits and challans.
- Paid demand not reflected: submit payment details or correct challan issue.
- Dispute on assessment addition: review appeal.
- Demand during appeal: consider stay/recovery position separately.

What if tax was already paid but demand is still showing?

Is rectification the same as appeal?
No. Rectification is for apparent mistakes. Appeal is for disputed additions or legal/factual issues.
